Hayfever and pregnancy.

The most difficult thing my wife has had to cope with during pregnancy has been hayfever. She suffers a lot from hayfever and this last year has been particularly bad. Due to the pregnancy she could not take the tablets and she suffered a lot even indoors and taking the usual precautions (clean environment, remove the cloths that one has worn outside, wash hair ecc...). I have just learned that there are air purifiers on the market and from what I have read about they work very well with allergies and odours. They use filters that filter out the pollen from the air, there are several reviews in some allergy related sites and they all say very good things. It seems that the best filters are called High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters (entry for HEPA filters at the Wikipedia here). They are supposed to filter out 99.97% of pollen, dust, mould and bacteria and airborn particles down to less than one micrometer diameter. A few examples of these appliances are here, their prices range from £20 to a few hundred pounds. I intend to get one for next spring when the baby will be breast feeding and my wife will not be able to take the tablets. I'll put a post here again when I have seen it working.

Hi! I'm due in January, and have found that my allergies are the biggest problem that I have had as well. Since they are doing construction in the building where I work, and the weather keeps changing (freezing one week, 70 and sunny the next), the only real relief I get is when I use a product here in the states called Vicks Vabo-rub. It's just a topical cream that you rub on your chest, and although it doesn't fix anything, it does allow me to get a good night's rest, which is something rare! I can sleep a good 6 hours with it straight through. The HEPA filters on an air purifier are great, however, they have a limited range, and don't help when you have to go out. When not pregnant, I still have horrible allergies and take shots to help immunize myself.

Hi Laura,

thanks for the advice, we will try it. Something that is also very useful when going out is putting Vaseline in your nostrils. The pollen sticks to it rather than going into your respiratory conducts. It might also help indoors in your case with all the dust of the building works.

cheers

Hi I have 2 under 2yrs and I had a problem with my allergies too and in the states they have these nightlights that clear out your airways so she could atleast have a comfy night's sleep I think they are made by sudafed.also once your little one gets here I highly reccomend the hearts sounds bear it replicates the sounds the baby heard in the womb such as heartbeat and blood rushing through the arteries and we found that it soothed our sons when nothing else would. Good luck and Congrats

Hi, I love the idea behind this blog! My hayfever was also a big problem during my pregnancies - all 4 of them! Sadly there was nothing around at the time that I could take. I would say to give anything a go though as long as it's safe. Thanks for checking out my site wwwbabynamefinder.blogspot.com, I also have another one which is babynamecombos.blogspot.com.
ps. Do you know if you are having a boy or a girl? Or is is a surprize?

Hey Laura,

Thanks for the shot out on the Baby A Day blog. Actually, my wife Aya has Atopic Dermatitis, which means she is allergic to all forms of dust and smoke and pollen etc., and she found that homemade soaps, especially the ones that leave your skin moisturized, worked good with her break-outs. Also she used the lotion called CervaVe, which would help a lot to keep the itching down.

Baby A Day is the picture blog of our 5 week old son Kai. But if you want to see our journey along the way, and how we ended up, check out Kai Monticello, where the whole pregnancy was blogged.

Thanks, also I am going to add a link to you from my site, just keep the good info coming!

Hi Everybody,

thanks for all the comments and advices. They are all very useful and in the spirit of this blog. I think they are worth an extra post summarizing all these very useful tricks on how to fight allergies in general and particularly during pregnancy and breast-feeding. I'll wait one or two days just in case more comments are on the way and then I'll write another post trying to summarize all the comments.

Another trick that I forgot to mention and works very well for us to open the airways when they are congested is to apply a heat or therapeutic pad on your chest or/and back. Some examples of these pads are here .

In the meanwhile we are still waiting for the baby to come (from the ultrasound scan it is most likely a boy), we are 4 days overdue now, so if you see no entries from me for a couple of days you will know where I am.

thanks everybody
